Intellectual Property Statistics

Reliable intellectual property (IP) statistics are an important tool in understanding trends in policy, business, and technology worldwide.

We cooperate with IP offices from around the world to provide the most up-to-date global IP data. We also publish statistical reports on worldwide IP activity and on the use of WIPO-administered treaties in protecting IP rights internationally.

WIPO's statistics come from several sources:

  • Patents, utility models, trademarks, industrial designs and plant varieties data provided by national/regional IP offices via WIPO's Annual IP Data Survey.
  • Geographical indications (GIs) data provided by competent national/regional authorities (such as IP office, ministry of agriculture, etc.) via WIPO’s Annual GI Data Survey.
  • Creative economy data provided by copyright offices, national publishers’ associations and national legal repositories via WIPO’s Annual Publishing Industry Survey.
  • Data compiled by WIPO during the application process of international filings through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the Madrid System and the Hague System.
  • Data extracted from the PATSTAT database, maintained by the European Patent Office.

By using WIPO’s statistical data, users agree not to republish or commercially re-sell any of the data. In addition, when employing WIPO’s statistical data in any written work, users must cite “WIPO Statistics Database” as the source of the data.
